Education Watch Study 2022 Unveiled in Insightful Press Briefing

In a highly anticipated press briefing, leading education experts and researchers shared key findings from the latest study of Education Watch titled Post-Pandemic: Recovery and Renewal of School Education. CAMPE, the secretariat of the Education Watch organized the event on 9 September 2023 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC), Dhaka which brought together 44 journalists representing renowned national newspapers and television channels within the country.

During the press briefing, the following key findings and concerns were highlighted:

ï‚§ Two third students with pass marks (33%+) cannot be considered satisfactory.
ï‚§ The opinion about learning gap due to the long closure during COVID is overwhelming that there is a big learning gap. The student assessment found poor results of both class-8 and 9 students with relatively easy class-8 questions.
ï‚§ Girls are doing slightly better than the boys– but affected by overall deficiencies.
ï‚§ Mother’s education has direct effect on children’s study result.
ï‚§ Dependency on private tuition and commercial guidebooks was quite high.
ï‚§ There was no systematic well-planned result-focused approach for recovery and remediation though some additional classes were held.
ï‚§ Recovery and remedial measures were not given a priority attention at a policy level. Pre-existing problems in the system of poor results and inequality have been aggravated by the pandemic which will continue without early and systematic recovery and remedial action.
ï‚§ Teacher support was sporadic, unsystematic and not result-focused in planning and monitoring.
ï‚§ Planning and capacity building for technology use including hardware, software, and teacher preparation, all remain inadequate.
ï‚§ There are large gaps between district results which should be seriously investigated for proper action to address the issue of inequality. No systematic planning for mitigating inequality by identifying inequalities and focused/targeted action.
ï‚§ Teacher's preparedness in TVET sector should be enhanced by support considering the global industrial need.

The press briefing also featured an interactive question-answer session for the media people. The event was presided over by Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chairperson of Education Watch, with moderation by Rasheda K. Choudhury, Member Secretary of Education Watch and Executive Director of CAMPE. Focal person of Education Watch Dr. Mostafizur Rahaman presented study findings while Education Watch member, Principal Quazi Faruque Ahmed and Core Research Team Member Dr. Syed Shahadat Hossain, Director-DURCMC, University of Dhaka also attended the event. Printed copies of the study report were distributed to the attendees, while an electronic version was made available for reference on CAMPE's website.
