Local Government and Community Discuss on Decentralization and Good Governance in Primary Education

CAMPE has been taking initiatives for promoting accountability through Citizen’s voice in Primary Education under its Protyasha Project for the last one year. In continuum of this initiative a four day long Orientation Workshop was jointly organized by CAMPE and IDEA (Sylhet)  from 18 to 21 August 2016 at Britenia Hall Room in Sylhet under the supervision of Primary Education in Sylhet Division to formulate a set of guidelines/standards for ensuring good governance in primary education by engaging the community. A total of 33 participants including District Primary Education Officers, Assistant District Primary Education Officers, PTI superintendents and Upazila Primary Education Officers of Hobigong, Moulovibazar, Sunamgonj and sylher districts attended the workshop.
The Major issues discussed on the workshop included the current situation of primary education in Bangladesh, current status of PEDP-3, national & international commitments to the primary education, moving MDGs to SDGs, government initiatives for ensuring community participation, good governance and decentralization in education, community engagement in implementation of education program, sharing of experience by community education watch group etc.
Mr. Shaymol Kanti Ghosh, Former Secretary, MOA and Mr. Gias-uddin Ahmed, additional secretary, Ministry of Primary & Mass Education was present as resources person, Ms. Tahmina Khatun, Deputy Director, Primary Education, Sylhet Division, Mr. Saidul Haque, Communication for Development Officer, UNICEF, Nazmul Haque, Executive Director, IDEA (Sylhet), Tapon Kumar Das, Deputy Director, CAMPE, Jamil Mustak, Deputy Program Manager, CAMPE facilitated the different session  of the workshop.
At he end of the workshop the participants prepared an action plan identifying ways and means of involving.  The community systematically to ensure good governance for addressing all kind of disparities in primary education.
